I'll have to check the maps on my new to me '12. The previous owner may have updated already.

That is why I use the aftermarket lifetime map GPS units. Free updates for the life of the GPS. Plus, all the features of a normal GPS are active, even while moving.

I hope everyone knows not to get too caught up in the word "lifetime", especially when it comes to Garmin. Garmin's version of lifetime is actually determined by however long they decide they want to support the product. It is a marketing scam. Garmin has historically abandoned updates on products in as little as 4 or 5 years. This is espectially true if they begin using a new format for the database on newer models. Once a format becomes outdated, the writing is on the wall.

If they happen to continue using the same format of your GPS for newer products, support could last longer, but don't ever count on it.

True enough but 4 or 5 years (over 12 years in my case) or more of annual updates at $95 a shot is a lot pricier than free over that same time period for unlimited updates.
