Looks limited to MN and TX. The participants will be doing a lot of riding in between and may stop somewhere near you, but they don't linger long. Nature of the beast.
I was at the last rally start in NM and it was a great time. I wish I could be at this one. Looks like the FJRforum, which was a great place to read about the rally has locked out all guests from any reading, so that is a disappointment, but daily reports at the iron butt forum will have to suffice. Greg Rice is there to start again, but no longer a GL1800 rider. Good luck to Greg and the rest of the riders.
Tim Masterson is doing some coverage of the event as well. https://hardtxrider.blogspot.com/2017/06/iron-butt-rally-volunteer-duty.html
Well I made it there for the start, things went very well, all kinds of bikes, even a 2 stroke liquid cooled Suzuki 750 ! There's a guy entered with a sidecar and has his wife and daughter along ! Also a 1977 Honda Goldwing with some pretty cool modifications, I think I've seen that same Goldwing in a few other IBA events. don't know what manufacturer had the most bikes there but I would guess Honda or BMW, plenty of Yamaha there as well. Don't think I saw any KTM's .
So you missed the part where I said "or someone "? Who knows where the mistake was made ? My point was if someone was going by the date , they would be missing out .
I was there also. Most riders looked a little tired but in good spirits for 3000 miles in 3 days. Only 8 more days to go. Sorry I didn't SE Robeth so I could finally put a handshake on him and those great looking grandkids. I did however see Johnny S there along with his wife.
I was happy to see a volunteer there with a bike lift and a tool box ready to lend a hand to any rider that needed one.
These are truly the toughest riders in the world!

Really sorry we missed you. [emoji853][emoji853] Our loss for sure.
We were at the checkpoint from 4:30 until about 8:00 giving the riders a good ol' Tennessee welcome to Texas! Most riders seemed to get a kick out of it, so we plan to do it again Saturday.
We were fortunate to meet Johnny S and Paula. Had a nice conversation with them.
Wishing all the riders the best as they head out for leg 2 this morning!
Robeth, I talked with Dosxxs as he is a really good friend and a certified hard-core LD rider. He was hoping to meet you too. Joe offered to give me a guided tour around the DFW metromess if I could make it up there, but I am just a keyboard rider these days.
Now for my question. Why so many riders in this year's IBR? I seem to recall that in the past the limit was 100 riders, or actually 100 motorcycles IIRC. (I may be wrong about that!). This year the field began with 117 riders on 107 motorcycles.

Glen, your guess is as good as mine about the number of entires this year, but here's mine:
Lots of interesting riders and bikes applied (several interesting hopeless class bikes, 1st 3 up entry, etc.) so the brain trust wanted to let those in (for good cause), plus there were a goodly number of women entires who deserved a spot in the big dance. Therefore, the final tally is greater this year than previous years.....that's my theory, and I'm STINKING to it!
The IBR folks are pretty clever and seem to avoid painting themselves into corners, so the number of entires are not set in stone. Pretty smart strategery if you ask me.
The young guy with the GL1000 rocks. Lots of slick work done to it, including what looks like a cooling system with liquid transfer to a cooling vest/jacket. I hope we get to see more.
I went through the results of the first leg looking for familiar names. One thing I noticed was that at least 3 names that I expected to see in the IBR apparently did not enter. I am curious about Marc Beaulac (Flyguy405) from this forum, Will Barclay riding his Harley, and Josh Mountain on his FJR. I'm just curious. Anybody know why they didn't do the IBR this year?
There were a few well equipped Wings there but overall BMWs owned the parking lot. I especially liked the bike with the big neon letters below the windscreen saying 'SLOW TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT' in reverse print. Texas sure has it's share of drivers who think they have a lease on the left lane and won't move over for **** or high water.
Just reading the latest post and read that Greg Rice and Rob Wilenski were withdrawn as a team and out of the rally! I met Greg in Dallas in 2010 at the first Republic of Texas rally. He was a great inspiration to me in my LD riding aspirations and I pretty much rigged my bike out just like his was to help me achieve the goals I had at the time. I am very curious as to weather it is the team commitment, a BMW issue with one of the bikes or a planning/routing conflict between riders that caused them to pull out. Greg told me that the financial commitment to run an IBR was about $10K after all was said and done. I wonder if this was the reason some of the names Glockjock mentioned were not on the list. If you read the rally rules there is no commercial sponsorship allowed it is strictly an amature rally to keep all the sponsors out. This is why you see all the generosity of the general public for these guys when they need something to keep them in the hunt. I know I would take a part off my bike to help one of them keep going! http://ibr.wvi.com/ibr/_2017/2017IBR-Friday-June30-Sidebar4.pdf
There are also riders currently in New York and Key West that are due back in Allen Texas in less than 23 hours!! Guess there will be some folks sleeping on the sidewalk in the next 23 hours if they plan to carry on.
I plan on being in Allen again tomorrow evening to make my own assessment of how the riders look after 5 days of tough riding conditions!!
One of the Connie riders destroyed his clutch on Long Island traffic and has withdrawn. [emoji853][emoji853][emoji853] Bike is on the shop awaiting tx in the morning. He made it out there, just ain't gonna make it back to Allen.
Be sure and look us up.....we'll be the ones waving the orange and white Pom poms......there cute kids and one ugly mug. Two guesses as to which is the ugly mug!
"Due to things I could not change I had to drop out of the Iron Butt Rally. ...
No matter how well I was doing I could not allow that to take precedence over getting bake safe.
I am unhappy about my decision but I do not regret my decision.
I am pissed off about it but I still don't regret my decision.
