Just curious, why is the drive shaft and final drive on the Wings seem so problematic? .
If you look at the rear drive unit, the rear drive is a single-sided swing arm. The entire rear end weight is fed into a roller bearing. From the parts fiche it seems described as a 26mm wide bearing. The rear drive has to carry the support loads in addition to the propulsive loads.
On a bike like the GW1500 and the ST1100 the rear wheel loads are taken out by an axle shaft feeding the loads into a swingarm at two fairly wide points. The single sided swingarm allows for easier rear wheel removal.
I'll go totally green and give up my GoldWing when Al Gore gives up his charter jet.
