I thought I'd share what my voltmeter install looks like. I also put in an ambient air temp gauge. Yes, it's 22 degrees in my garage. And the headlights take more than the tender can sustain so it shows 11.2 volts.

Here is the same one as Sears:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-OEM-Mits...3D371161187636

It looks like this one and the sears one say "Genuine Mitsubishi OEM" and the others do not.

The newer wings have a 1200W (1.2KW) alternator.

Rating is at 5000 rpm.

A – A 0.06 – 0.08 Ω –
A – B 0.03 – 0.04 Ω –
Rotor coil resistance (20C/68F) 2.1 – 2.5 Ω –
Rotor coil slip ring O.D. Std= 22.7 mm (0.89 in); Service Limit= 21.2 mm (0.83 in)

I think the coils fire all 6 plugs on each revolution of the engine - or is it every other revolution? (Need another cup of Joe to wake my mind up!) If once, that is about 4,500 electricity eating sparks per minute at a 750 rpm idle, 18,000 sparks per minute at 3,000 rpm. As the engin's spark load on the weak battery increases with rpm, the unassisted battery voltage decreases and makes it more noticeable. Just my WAG.

Glen,

Just caught this thread. I agree, from your description it sounds like the brushes are bad. We can order and replace just the brushes if you want me to.

Glen, if you don't take Fred up on that offer, I want dibs on your old one, sent to Fred for refresh, then on then to me. I am at 145,000 miles on my original and should be getting ready to deal with it. I'll park it in my garage, right next to my spare driveshaft and (2) spare final drives!

I'll take some of the bite out of your cost, pay you for your dead one and make Fred a few bucks for fixing it. 3 happy guys instead of one broke one?

Hoss, as you know I've ordered a new one from Sears. I figure a new one should go another 150,000 worry-free miles, and if so that should see me through my riding days. If the new one actually does work, the one that Fred removes will be yours. Of course, if it doesn't then I'll get Fred to put in new brushes and reinstall the old one.

It was getting time for another round of Fred-love on my bike anyway. I had already planned to make an appointment after Jan 1 and take it to Fred for a complete tuneup and once-over. The alternator going out just raised the priority! I called Fred, and he agreed to work on my bike just as soon as the new alternator arrives in a couple of days.

I ride too fast, too far, and too often to ride anything but a Goldwing rolling on a car tire pulling a Tailwind trailer because friends don't let friends vote Democrat.
