Alternator

Headed out on a 8 day trip in June with 3 other Wing riders. We have an 03, an 07, an 08 and a 2012. The first 3 all have over 100,000 miles on them. In fact the 03 is real close to 150,000 miles. I am thinking it would be wise to have a spare Alternator on hand for the trip. I am wondering which brand of Alternator to buy, and where is the best place to buy it from? Also, I don't think the 03 will use the same Alternator as the other 3 newer Wings would use. Is that correct?

TIA,

Phil

The 03 can use the newer model just fine. I would buy an OEM version from Honda for the 2008 for your spare, unless the 2012 version is cheaper.

Buy the alternator from Honda. I tried the less expensive off brand. Only lasted about two months.
Check the online pricing through www.partspitstop.com I buy lots of things through them. Good prices, and good service.

Ditto! I wouldn't put a aftermarket alternator in my bike if they were free. Except maybe a compufire. Learned the hard way.

Friend of mine is running one from a '09 model on his '02 and has been for years. Works great. It was what the dealer had at the time when his went out on the road. I carry one listed for an '05 on my '01 wing in the right saddle bag all the time now. Buy new OEM and be $$ ahead. JMHO

Could purchase a Honda OEM from aj-elec.com for $297 with a one year warranty. Any other Honda OEM purchased from a dealer will have no warranty from Honda if it was not installed by a Honda tech. Ask me how I know. This is the new 2006 and above higher amp unit. I have no interest in the above enterprise other than to provide information. Gary

That is a good price from AJ. According to Honda's web site, any part you purchase through an authorized Honda dealer will have 6 months warranty no matter who installs it. If you install it, Honda will not cover the labor to replace it, but if a tech installs it, they will cover the labor as well. Batteries have a 1 year warranty.

There's a lot of dealers that are unaware of the corporate policy in writing and screw people over.

Thank you

Thanks to all of you for your replies. I ordered a new 100% OEM alternator yesterday from AJ-Electric for $297.00 including shipping and no tax. It does have a 1 year warranty and the gentleman I talked to there said he has never had a problem with one of these. I told him I was buying it for a spare and after our trip it may sit on my shelf for years. (Murphy's Law) He said if that happens, not to worry he would still warranty the alternator if there was a problem down the road. Hard to beat service like that. This is also the company that my good friend "Rocky" recommended buying from.
Thanks again and have a great day,

Phil / Red Bull
