Is the key different on 2012 Wing?

I went to Lowes to get a spare key made using a Honda Accord blank (like I have always done before) and the guy told me the Goldwing key is no longer a match for an Accord blank. Is this correct?

Lowe's and Home Depot no longer carry the correct blank.

A local hardware store sent me to a locksmith who made me 3 keys for something like $18. They had a similar shaped black head w/o the Honda emblem.

The goldwing key may look similar to a car key, BUT the groove down the lenght of it is longer.

BTW: It's no different than the previous ones.

Walmart matched the keys for me, I don't remember the number but it was not the Access 27.

Be sure to check the length of that groove down the length.

The shorter groove keys look idential, otherwise.

The short groove keys will work on gas, storage pocket and trunk, BUT not on ignition.

I found an Axxess 27 at Sutherlands and had it cut and it works perfectly in the 2012. The trick is finding an Axxess 27 blank. Home Depot used to carry them, but the one I went to no longer has them.

Cool

I had 2 keys made yesterday at Hanna's ACE hardware (aka Chrome Bolt on the internet). The blank is made by HY-KO. Its number is HD104. Both keys work in all pockets and the ignition .
Beware as posted above. Some blanks have short slots and work everywhere except the ignition .

I got mine at the local Wally World. Exactly the same as for the '02.
I don't want to have to remove them when I leave the bike unattended.
So I use the short groove blank.

My local Home Depot had several Axxess 27 key blanks left and they were clearanced price. I paid
$1.05 for 3 keys that worked perfect.

Pep Boys had the Axxess 27 blank a few months ago.

Axxess 27R will operate everything except the fork lock.

Axxess 31R at Home Depot works everything!

The Axxess 27 key is identical to the OEM Honda key. The Axxess 27R is the one with the shorter grooves. I believe if you check, the 27R WILL operate everything including the ignition (i.e. start the bike) but it WILL NOT operate the fork lock because of the shorter grooves. The shorter grooves will not allow the key to be pushed down far enough to engage/disengage the fork lock. As mentioned above, there are other key manufacturers that make blanks which fit the GL1800, but be aware of the difference in the groove lengths. Compare it to your OEM key if you want it to be able to operate the fork lock.

Here is a list of some of the key blanks that will work on the GL1800:
