Did Honda add a little more knee room on the newer model year GL1800 for taller riders, seems I had read this somewhere but I can't find any specification on it?
I didn't notice any additional room when I switched from a 2006 to a 2014. It was only after I installed an Ultimate King Seat on the 2014 that I was granted an extra inch or so of knee space.
I don't think so. 32" inseam here. I had to lower the pegs to keep my knees off the Fairing. I used what Kuryakyn calls their "Premium Mini Boards with Comfort Drop Mounts" in their lowest position and now my knees just clear the Fairing. (Chrome P/N 4328, Black P/N 7564) I then had to move the position of the Shift Lever using DHS Racing's kit P/N DHS-11252 to bring the Shift lever into alignment with the lowered Mini Boards. In the final analysis it works, but . . . any more and I'd need to make changes to the seat.
Based on that, your 2013 must actually have less knee room than my 2002. I also have a 32" inseam, and my knees are not even close to the fairing. In fact, I have an outlet for my Gerbings right in front of my left knee, and it doesn't even hit that.
Perplexing! I wonder if you sit farther forward of the seat back riser than I do.
Good question. Since I took that picture I adjusted the link between the Master Cylinder and the Brake Pedal Linkage to bring the Brake Pedal into alignment with the Mini Board. Moving the Brake Pedal one notch proved to be too much. It had the pedal significantly below the Mini Board.
Yeah. I have 34" inseam and I don't get close to touching the fairing with my knees. Easily an inch or more room. My knees have never touched the fairing.
I beleive when the 2012 and newer models where introduced the front was re designed and is wider and longer (I remember vaguely a press release noting the new design)but giving less knee room than 2010 and older GL's. I have a 34 inseam and a2012, and if I sit properly no problem, if I slouch my knees hit.
I found the ad for the the 2012 and nothing's was mentioned about leg room.
"Other enhancements include upgraded styling, increased luggage capacity, better wind and weather protection, improved suspension, new seat, new GPS navigation system that is now programmable with two card slots for sharing and creating trip routes"
On my 08 at a 34" inseam I'm not even close to hitting my legs on the fairing, probably 2 to 3 inches at least. I sit back far as the stock seat allows. Maybe some sit forward on the seat? Not sure, but leg room not a consideration for me.
When I bought my 2013, I had switched from a GL1500. It was a bit claustrophobic, but after a few miles, I realized I made the right choice upgrading to the GL1800.
I have a 32" inseam and felt like my knees had enough room and after a couple of 200+ mile rides, decided that the stock seat had to go.
I like Corbin seats and put one on and gained 1 to 1 1/2" for the knees due to the Corbin's different seating position which was butt a little further back.
This was totally a seat comfort decision and not a needing more room for knee decision though it helped room for knees.
Pretty sure there's not more room on the new ones, possibly even less when I compare to my 2001.
I have a 2013 and a 32" inseam. When I wear overpants with armour, the knee pads are right at the fairing. If I sit up straight and all the way back, they have some clearance, if I slouch or move forward in the seat, they'll hit. I've actually got scuff marks on the fairing from the textile of my overpants rubbing it as my knee hits the fairing.
All in all it works for me....it's a bit cramped but not uncomfortable. I'd go to an Ultimate King seat, but that steals room from my wife and she likes the seat as it is. After all...the Wing is my wife's bike anyway...I'm just the chauffeur.
Would you post a before and after pictorial on the difference of your
Ultimate seat? It would be greatly appreciated.
