Part composition needed

On the side of the motor, between the upper and lower heads there is a pieces of chrome that has "Honda" on it. Can someone tell me what this is made of? Is it metal or plastic? If it's metal, how thick or solid is it?

Thanks in advance!

That piece is most definitely plastic.

I may be getting a "new" '12 and was hoping it was metal. I thought it'd be nice to powder coat in a matching color for some contrast. Not sure the plastic could handle the heat unfortunately. LOL

Howard, for 2015 Honda color matched the red bike's trim bar just as you described. It would of course be pricey but that would be a possibility. Unfortunately they didn't do the same in blue.

I may research this more. I believe they had a black one a year or two ago as well. Man I wish it was metal….

Should be able to buy a black one thru parts.

P&A also has ones with other decoration than the Honda lettering.

There are (or at least were) gold ones available thru Honda accessories as well.

Find a local Hydro Dipper. Works great on plastic and there is all kind of options from designs to solid colors. The attached photo shows the plastic engine covers that I had done last fall.
