Brief holiday suggestions

On the Labour (I'm Canadian) Day weekend, I'll have been on the road for 3 weeks with my Wing and tent trailer. My wife will fly to Phoenix and we'll spend the weekend with friends. Next stop is near Los Angeles the next weekend. So, we've got Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to fill (will drive to LA on Friday). Looking for suggestions ...

On my own, I'd head for out of the way primitive campsites - but that's what my 3 weeks is for. My better half has much higher expectations (but we have a limited budget). She wants to stay in the "big heat" areas, as I suspect she was a lizard or something in a previous life. So ... an interesting area with either an up-scale campsite or reasonable motel (pool is pretty much a requirement). The idea would be to settle in one spot and maybe do a bit of sightseeing riding in the area, but mostly a few days of R&R - i.e., I know there's some good riding roads to the east, but she won't want to spend every day on the bike, and it makes for a longer ride to LA.

Sedona comes to mind, but we've been through there twice and anyway it might be outside our budget. Looking west from Phoenix, I don't see much besides desert. Our fall-back might be to get to Palm Springs and then tour Joshua Tree, but I'm hoping we can do better.

All suggestions welcomed ....

(Same weekend here in the States, but here it's spelled Labor ;) )

Suggestion? Vega$, baby... :D

...or, a little less crowded, just across the river and a bit south of Vegas is Laughlin, NV. Again, another river community, a couple of day rides in the region (Oatman, AZ), Route 66 outside of Kingman, AZ, etc. and just a day's ride to L.A.

You'll get the full-on desert riding experience in early September; temps could still be north of 35c (95F) in many places, so she'll enjoy it.

I did a ride on that day across the Sonoran desert to San Diego the first year we had our Wing...'bout heat-stroked my wife on that one! Turned out that was the hottest Labor Day weekend in about 50 years.

We did learn best time to ride is early...you can cover a LOT of desert by the time it really starts to get hot; but then you have the benefit of early check-in and a pool as well.

Hope those ideas help!

Thanks for the suggestions, folks.

Vegas kinda makes my skin crawl, but we looked at room prices and there's pretty good value. And if we hang out at the hotel pool, go for a couple rides outside town, we can ignore most of the stuff that doesn't appeal. I'll have a look at Laughlin too, though - might get the same result even cheaper.

Do not stay on the Strip if you are choosing Vegas...unless you've never been there before.

Recommend that you stay at one of the "Station Casino" properties. I've stayed a couple of times at Sunset Station as well as Palace Station (off the Strip, but in the vicinity, if you choose to head down there - take a bus down to the Strip; leave the bike at the hotel!)...decent places.
