I have only been there once but the ride out 89A North was just beautiful. Follows a river and then starts climbing a mountain. There is a beautiful overlook once you reach the top of the mountain.
Are you riding, driving or sight seeing. On a bike you don't want to miss 89A north of Sedona to Flagstaff...lot's of traffic but a beautiful ride. 89A South up to Jerome and over Mingus Mountain. Just a couple of things...great thing about Sedona is that it's not that big and everything you see will amaze.
As noted by others. 89a from Sedona to Flag is a world class stretch of road. As for being a tourist: the parks are nice. Some of the kitchy eateries are fun. If you are into new age-y stuff you should go on a tour. Also, some of the ancient rock art in the area is cool.
Cheers!
