Well I've been slacking on putting this together, but let's do this! It's time for another year of Rockies Gold and enjoying the incredible fall colors! The dates for the 2017 ride will be September 14th thru the 17th here in Montrose. This is a very informal get together and everyone is welcome to attend. Just show up and enjoy the majestic scenery of things like the Million Dollar Highway, Black Canyon, Lizard Head Pass, Grand Mesa and Colorado National Monument just to name a few.
I just got off the phone with the Red Arrow Inn and they have set aside 25 double queen standard rooms for us at $96.99 per room (only $4 more than last year!) They can set aside more rooms if needed. Their number is 970-249-9641. Mention Rockies Gold for the rate. They have a king suite available as well for $10 more. If anyone wants to arrive a day early, they'll be able to get the same rate. After the 17th, the rate goes back up to their standard rate of $119.
Jeanette and I are already planning on having another get together at our place on Friday night the 15th. Nothing fancy; we'll provide the burgers, soft drinks and hot dogs. You provide whatever else you want to bring. We always enjoy seeing old friends and meeting new ones, playing pool and sharing stories. Looking forward to seeing everyone again!!
Best ride I had last year. Hopefully I can make it again this year. If anybody wants to see what the colors are like that time of year, these are my pictures from last year:
There are 2 right in town... and a few others within 25 miles.
The Montrose KOA is about a ½ mile from the hotel... and Cedar Creek RV Park is right behind it.
I wasn't there for Rockies Gold, but I stayed at Cedar Creek for 3 weeks last year with my 5th wheel setup. Nice place, friendly owners... a little more 'primitive' and not as 'neat' as the KOA, but a lot less expensive. http://www.cedarcreekrv.com/index.html
I can't wait to go back this year. I had a blast in no small part to 1096dad's tour guiding skills. tberger53 also did a great job leading a couple of us through RMNP.
I will be doing a tour of the Rockies before and after my adventure up into Alaska this summer. If any of you have some great routes you care to share I would love to see them so I can add them to my GPS and/ or laptop. Downloads of GPX files for Garmin especially appreciated. Thank you.
I had a great time last year but unfortunately I can't make it this year I will be going out to Albuquerque for the balloon festival.
You guys have a great time and hope to see you on the next one.
I plan on a fall foliage ride every year to eastern Arizona and western New Mexico. I'm going to plan on also shooting over to the balloon festival this year......it's a great thing to experience.
The more I have been thinking of this get together, the more I am hovering...
I am not too keen on 10 hour rides for 3.5 days to get there, ride the roads around Colorado for 3 days, then back to Florida in 3.5 days of 10 hour days of riding......or trailering for that matter.
Am I allowed to rent a Harley and do the Rockies Gold ride? I am thinking of just flying in and riding from Denver over that Wednesday, ride for the 3 days, then catch a flight out the following Monday morning. Saw a price of $171 round trip from Orlando on Frontier Air. Great price.....

Had a great time last year riding out with Capt. Bob. As of now I plan on returning. I have modified a cargo trailer to use as a camper and will probably transport the Wing in that this year. That long ride out there is less fun than it used to be, and the bunk in the new camper is more comfy that the tent. What can I say guys I'm getting older but still riding. See ya'll there.
In most KOA's, the basic cabins are just that... a structure to keep you dry, with raised/platform beds to keep you off the floor. It's a "no tent, no problem" type solution for some. You're expected to bring your own pillow-sheets-sleeping bag-whatever to keep you warm & comfortable. That said, I've seen cases where... if asked, and arranged with management prior to arrival, they will 'rent' linens for an additional fee. Never hurts to call and ask... the worst they can say is "no".
Some KOA's do offer cabins with linens supplied... and some of the deluxe cabins even have dinnerware/cooking utensils with small kitchenettes. These vary by location.
Thinking more about just riding the Wing out there and taking my sweet time. Capt. Bob I loved your company but you about wore me out with those long days getting out there. Maybe we can meet at the KOA and share a cabin again. Let me know what ya think.
I know your joking about the long days. We only averaged about 500 miles a day getting there. My last day coming back was 21 hrs. 27 min. and 1108 miles but I didn't have to worry about sitting up a tent. LOL
Starting to gear up for this event. Had such a great time last year. Got new tires ordered and the Big Girl will be ready to roll. Leaving from West of Nashville. on the Monday prior to the event, tent camping along the way as last year. I enjoy rolling slow and easy and like to smell the coffee along the way. Can't wait for this event. The Host for this event could not be nicer and more accommodating folks. Look forward to seeing ya'll out there in the heart of the magnificent Rockies.
Just made my reservation for KOA. Can't wait for this event. Wing is ready for the road and I'm ready. Bring on September. Looking forward to seeing ya"ll.
Anyone riding out from the Nashville area let me know and maybe we can hook up for the ride out there.
I've attached a few links of routes I've put together with google maps and would like to get input from those who've ridden rockies gold before. Are these routes about right for day trips out of Montrose; too long, too short? Right roads, wrong roads, etc. Thanks
While you are thinking about moving to Colorado permanently after seeing our sights, for you, more well-heeled people with a spare $149,000,000.00 to invest, please let me be your buyer's broker for:

Well, I still don't know if I'll be able to ride in September... or, if I can, if I'll have a bike. But I went ahead and made reservations at the KOA for that week. Gonna be heading south from Yellowstone during that time anyway, and figured either way it'd be nice to see some of you guys again during the evening "debriefs". :wink2:
I would love to make this event again to see some old friends but, unfortunately I will be in Buena Vista area at that time doing some dual sport off road riding.
Ride safe and have fun!!
