The plastic key fob slid off the metal key the keyring i had was attached to the metal key and hooked to my belt loop. I felt it hit my foot doing 80+ on the interstate i tried to look for it. No luck
Prefer a key, had a fob and it’s no more convenient keeping track of a loose fob than it is sticking a key in an ignition. You always know where it is.
There is less "keeping track of loose fob"..just put it in your pocket and forget it.
I'm liking the FOB more and more..
..it just stays in pocket, no digging for a key with leather chaps and gloves on (not easy).
..never get inside to eat and wonder, "dang, did I leave the bags/trunk unlocked?" (everything locks automatically when you walk away from the bike)
Very convenient and one less thing to keep track of..
Now now, Matt. He was going for the building superintendent look with the keys and fob on a belt hook. If you lose the fob, the remote start feature is not available.
You mean to tell me this turkey only comes with one fob? All of my other vehicles came with two.
Time to be jealous of Canada..... They get two and a tool kit. Do you think they will give us the missing stuff if we tell the Dealer "I'm Canadian, I am supposed to get two fobs and a tool kit" that they will believe us and give them to us?
Lol neither. Im just so used to carrying my keys hooked to my belt loop I didn't think the fob could slide off the metal key with such ease. Its cheaply made if you ask me.

Which pocket in which jacket or which pocket in which pants? All those options just for pockets never mind belt loops when the only option for a key is right in front of you in the bike while running.
Right front pants pocket on the key ring with my house key.
..it goes in there when I lock and leave the house and it only comes back out when I get home and need to unlock the house.
Guess that works better if you leave the key in the ignition all the time? but once you remove it, you've got all the same old "where to put it" issues ..
No big deal...just thought I'd mention the alien key FOB thingy (at first disliked) is becoming more and more liked by me.
ymmv
I wonder if it would survive a trip through the washing machine?..:surprise: Having two certainly makes more sense. Guess I'll have to get one. So far mine hasn't left the phone compartment...A "Nor Easter" with significant snow predicted for Thursday...:frown2:
I ordered a extra fob from my dealer but sadly they didn’t have the shorting connector nor any idea how to do it. The mechanic is a whiz on the 17 and earlier but they are totally unprepared for the 18. To be expected I suppose.
I did the same, getting a spare Fob from the dealer. he didn't know how to program either. I downloaded the instructions from this forum and ordered a shorting connector for about $25. I will program mine myself when it comes rather than pay the dealer 1/2 hr labor plus tax about $55.
So if you have a QR code reader app on your phone and take a picture of the qr code on the tag you'll find the emergency number on the plastic tag is embedded in the qr code.
I just don’t get all the issues with a fob?? Don’t any of you guys own a newer vehicle? All the new vehicles have keyless entry . . . no keys to start . . . push a button . . . fob + attached keys stay in your pocket! It’s that simple and so is the 2018 Goldwing! :biker:

Some do make it sound like rocket science. I remember when I bought my first motorcycle that did not have a kick start option. I asked what did you do if the electric starter failed. The salesman asked if I had a kick start backup in my car. I said no. He said,"there you have it!" It took a long time before motorcycle riders trusted electric starters. Too long.
Not goldwing related but. First day with my new pickup, was going swimming. So I left my phone and wallet in the truck. I locked the truck and put the keys under the bed liner. Then closed the tailgate. Well the new truck had a locking tailgate. Needless to say there was no way to get the keys out.
I had set up onstar so I went to the office of the park and called onstar and was able to get the truck unlocked.
I thought of attaching my fob to a key ring with belt hook. However, I had visions of it coming off at 80 MPH and not knowing it. Solution: An old Leatherman tool holster is the perfect size for the fob. It is securely looped on your belt, and the Velcro flap stays secure. No fear.
