For those who care, I just bought and installed the J&M Open Face HS8154 headset:

It's a basic and relatively inexpensive gizmo, but it does the job, sound quality is descent and the thing seems to be pretty solid so far. Of course, the real acid test will come in the due course... if the headset disintegrates, I will certainly update this post. Cheers!

For $65 with a lower cord, you cant expect a whole lot of greatness, but Im sure it will perform well for the money.

Lower cords can be $50 by themselves.
Exactly. $130 for two sets - even if they die, what the heck.

I've been having this debate. All I need the headsets for is communication with passenger and CB and nav. I prefer music through the air on the Polks. I'm thinking a lower priced set will do.

Opinions? (no, not here!)

My wife has used the HS-8154 in her HJC CL-33 helmet for the past five years. Returning from Deal's Gap last year, her right speaker started cutting out. By the time we got home, it failed completely. I called J&M, sent the entire headset back to them, and they replaced the entire unit for free (less the postage). Their warranty was for one year so I was surprised and impressed that they would honor it four years later. Now that's great customer service. It may be J&M's cheapest headset but they stand by it and my wife is satisfied with the sound quality.

i have owned the same J&M headset for 2 years , works great, i really like and prefer the one piece cord

my other headset is from Chatterbox, over 250,000 miles of use and the only problem was i had to replace the cord once, J&M headset cords are available off the shelf at many dealers, Chatterbox cords are not so readily available, i had to special order one

As a caution, this headset is designed for full open face helmets. It has a huge mike which may not fit behind all face shields, if you use one on your open face helmet.
there are 2 choices, open face or full face, select the correct headset when ordering and there should be no problem

Now if you want to listen to music and speech Remove the piece of cr@p ear pieces and buy yourself some over the ear head phones that would be used with a walkman or a device like that, soldier the ear phones to the headset. You'll be amazed with the quality of the headsets. I've been using the Koss 35 sets. These are getting hard to impossible to find so I've been going on fleabay and buying sets from asia about $3-5 a set with free shipping.

For open face, the microphone size is large (about 1/2 to 5/8 inch) but still fits well under the flip front faceshields. My wife's headset came with a choice of two microphone sock sizes in the box. She slipped the larger size over the microphone and it still fit under the shield of her HJC CL-33 helmet.

Just placed an order for 2 sets a few minutes ago - appreciate the review - I just want to be able to talk to my passenger (same girl for 40 years! :) I'm just thrilled my wife rides with me at all - she doesn't exactly share the enthusiasm for motorcycles that I have! )

I'll listen to the music over the speakers

JM HS8154 are now installed

I'm pretty sure I ordered the sets from whomever you mentioned in your post ("Wingstuff?") - I checked Direct Line and they didn't seem to have them (or I just didn't find them)

Anyway, I just finished installing them - they sound fine, even music - they are a "snap" to install (simple install) - installed them in both helmets - They are a bit tight on my ears in the HJC helmets, and I'm not sure how I'm going to address the problem if they end up bothering me - they are centered on the ear - I'm more worried how my wife will tolerate them on her helmet - I brought it up (the helmet with headset) from the shop afterwards, but she was already asleep - someone mentioned taking some SONY headsets apart, might do that - also haven't "road tested" them yet, but I sure like how they interface with the bikes system

Again, "anyway," I'm glad to have them and appreciate your review - I simply didn't want to pay $500 for a "bluetooth" set and wasn't going to purchase anything soon, until I saw your review

I'm VERY glad to have them - "GREAT" Karaoke system too (just turn the auto mute off) and I don't bother anyone! :)

mic on 8154

Is it the Mic size or just the size of the mic sock that comes w/this set?
The "wind sock" is fairly large and the mic is not what I'd call small - on the end of the boom , as someone more or less mentioned, the mic is about the size of a stack of dimes about 1/2" to 3/4" in length - I will probably be adding a volume and mute control for the passenger - even over the music I can hear either mic and breathing at rest - I'd say it's likely going to be worse with the ambient noise - again though, the wind sock is fairly substantial - we'll see I guess
