Ugly drive train sound

This is a poor recording, but this is the sound I have when I'm in 3rd thru 5th gear on the center stand. 1st & 2nd it's relatively quiet.

I have no vibration or noise at all when riding, it's only when it's "freewheeling" on the center stand. Seems like it's coming from the splines or the universal area.

Opinions?

Waldo, I would not pay any attention to any strange sounds that come from an unloaded drive train. Well maybe if I heard a bearing grinding but anything else I would forget about. If it is quiet when you ride it enjoy. But what your listening to is just gear lash in the tranny, drive shaft and rear end.

When the bike is on the center stand, the U joints are at a very odd angle.
When there at this odd angle there noisy.

I think somebody tied the cat to your drive shaft.

I would certainly take a gander at the boot; the move the drive trane by hand in neutral to see if the problem reveals itself.

Now; why 'ntarnation were you running the bike through its gears while on the center stand? Did Ya suspect some problem?

Thanks

I wasn't too worried about it because it's quiet when on the ground. Never thought about the UJ angle - thanks for the info.

I thought I might ask. Splines on the Valkyrie were a nightmare. Required frequent applications of HIGH PRESSURE grease or they would go. There seems to be no dampening mechanism on the GL1800 like on prior years and the Valkyrie..... (see pic # 7)

I have a new final drive, swingarm and drive shaft in the shed just in case.

Merci

Chet I pulled my bike out of the garage and ran it the way you described..
I found the same thing as you.I have 64K on my bike and the noise went away with throttle.."Backlash" is what it is without load on it.
Did not get to that drawing yet, but I think this one will work.

Waldo, there is a dampening spring on the final shaft in the engine. Check out the parts breakdown for the final shaft.
Thanks. That's a different animal. The 1500 (pic 2) and Valkyrie (pic 1) have the same identical "damper spring" on the final shaft. I'm speaking of the dampers in the wheel hub. The pins from #8 go into holes in the FIVE rubber pads #1 which are inserted into FIVE slots in the wheel itself (slots are not shown, they are on the other side of the wheel). These don't exist on the 1800.

I would certainly take a gander at the boot; then move the drive train by hand in neutral to see if the problem reveals itself.

Now; why 'ntarnation were you running the bike through its gears while on the center stand? Did Ya suspect some problem?
Thanks, prs. I don't have exessive play and the boot is in dandy shape. I'm thinking it's just lash. It's really less in 1st and 2nd.

The reason I was doing this is to try to duplicate Fred's concern with the turn signal cancel delay in this post/thread.

I can't duplicate it. Mine cancels anytime the button is pushed.

I had a Gipro DS gear indicator with a "green" led display on my 09 metallic silver Goldwing. My navigator (wife) said "red" goes better with a metallic silver bike  (I will be selling the "green" version at half price).
Moving right along , the bike must have the rear wheel off the ground so the wheel can rotate for programming the indicator. I had to start the engine and run thru all the gears so the "red" Gipro DS can memorize the positions of all the gears (I think there is a tiny illegal inside the thing:joke:).
With the rear suspension on 25 it sounded like rocks or loose bolts in the transmission. I changed the height to setting 14 and all gears were smooth and quiet as a mouse at all RPM's.
Must be the angle of the universal as posted by "Biker John" :agree:.

Thanks for the additional input. I've put about 9k on her since that recording and she's smooth as a baby's behind in all gears all the time when I'm on the road.
