Hey all,

Greetings from Wisconsin.

My wife and I have planned a little trip over the July 4th weekend and as part of it, we wanted to do the swim with manatee thing. We have found Crystal River, FL on the net and were wondering if anyone has been there or has a specific suggestion.

We will be leaving July 1st from Wisconsin and be in FL on July 3rd. You can see the route on this shortened link i am placing on here.

I look forward to any suggestions.

while I didnt look at your route I have 2 cents worth since I grew up in Miami. Absolutely positively do not stop in miami unless your with people who live there and know the area. Next ; did you say July!!!!!!!!!!!!! hellooooo!!!! touristing across the lower part is mosquito death thru the glades. If you stop anywhere on the tamiami trail they will pick you up and suck you dry faster than a miami beach gambling ship. Sorry to rain on parade but in the summer NO ONE goes to the everglades. Extreme heat , bugs by the millions and guaranteed rain every afternoon.
Maybe you could try a coral reef instead of the glades ; warm water and no sqeeters since your in the keys already. Oh one other thing ; be open minded in key west and enjoy people watching ; its very different!:22yikes:

You might see one or two. I used to scuba dive down there a lot. The Manatee's head out to sea about the first of April.

February is the best month, they come in to the warmer water. Hundreds of them. After April 1 or so, they are far and few .
I was gonna argue with you Kit, but then I realized that it was Florida Prowlers that I was seeing near the beaches.

Well it is when we could get to go. And just cuz I am from Wisconsin doesn't meant I can't stand the heat... It's the humidity!!!!

FL has humidity Iraq and Afghanistan sure don't!!!

Florida is not bad, there is generally a breeze all along the coast. Rains like setting your watch though about 3 or 4 p.m a lot. Lightning is to be watched for, but the breeze helps with the heat.....most of the time.

If you see something very large, gray, fat, with a pug nose and a wide tail, it is most likely one of those prowlers. ;);)
