I am getting the wing ready for spring riding and need to replace the front tire. I want to take the rim and old tire to the dealer to have the new one installed. Does he need the brake rotors removed from the rim?.....Ken
Most dealers do not need the rotors removed. If you question their abilities, it is something to consider. I have never removed mine for them to change a tire.
Most tire changers take great care not to touch the rotors when mounting tires. The problem usually before or after the tire is mounted that the wheel may fall over or get mis-handled in some form. Whether or not to remove the rotor(s) is a choice you have to make.
Thanks for the info guys. I am going to leave the rotors on, as the dealer I am taking my tire to has been dealing in the Goldwings for many years. I'll be glad when my manuals arrive. . Thanks again....Ken
If it were me I'd take them off. If he leans them against something and it is the rotor that the something is touching and then it's bumped... It's only going to take 5 minutes max to take them off, plus you can clean things up a little. Just MHO.

I have never removed them for a tire change. You may ask the shop if it will effect the balance of the wheel with them off.
The only down side to removing the rotors when changing the tire is that you are suppose to replace the rotor bolts...I've removed my rotors two times and on the third time a few of the rotor bolts snapped off. New rotor bolts are like 2.99 a bolt.
I just changed my front tire and for the first time I didn't remove the rotors for a tire change. I was a bit nervous about the rotors getting damaged by some mishap and didn't leave the wheel out on my sight, but the tire change went smooth with the rotors still on the wheel. I wouldn't just drop off a front wheel with the rotors on the wheel to a dealer and leave it there though...too easy for someone to drop the wheel on it's side and bend the rotors.
While standing at the parts counter for something else,
I've seen one knocked over and slammed to the floor. (it was in the "to be pickup up" area)
The guy just looked around  (not at the tire, .. checking for who might have seen him)
then he picked it back up and leaned it against the wall and walked away.
They will NEVER admit to bending your rotors.
If you bring it back and complain, the mechanic will swear he didn't do it
.. well, maybe he didn't.
No one in the shop has total responsibility from the time you take it in
until the time you pick it up.
You'll never know if they bend your rotors until later..
.. then you'll be wondering:
Have I developed the wobble?
Did I get a bad tire?
Did my rotors get bent?
It only takes a few minutes to remove and replace them..
I don't need a lot of traffic on this, BUT...
I have this exaggerated sense of fairness (read: guilt :roll about taking a tire to someone who SELLS tires and asking him to mount it for me.
I see the great price on tires from Direct Line, and I'd love to buy a set, but I just can't see myself taking them in to a tire store and asking to have them mounted.
Can some of you disabuse me of this expensive, human frailty?
(Also - if you live around Marietta, GA, can you tell me WHERE you take your tires for this kind of service?)
Thanks.

When I've taken a tire in to have it mounted that I haven't purchased from them they just charge me more to mount it. But, you can just call and ask what they'll charge you to mount one you bought eslewhere.
like the previous poster said, you just get charged more than if you bought the tire from them---but i still save money! wallyworld will mount a ct(for the darksider rider) for $5 + disposal fee+ tax>>>> about $7.50 or so total; but they can't balance the tire with their equipment. but i have centramatics, so i don't need the tire balanced anyway. i take my front tire to the local cyclegear store; costs about 25-30 dollars for the front tire.
