Well since I now live in Montrose, I decided to go ahead and take the bull by the horns to make sure we have another year of riding the Rockies! The dates for the 2016 ride will be September 15th thru the 18th.

I just got off the phone with Heather at the Red Arrow Inn and she has set aside 25 double queen standard rooms for us at $93.99 per room. She said they can set aside more rooms if needed. Their number is 970-249-9641. Mention Rockies Gold for the rate. They have a king suite available as well for a few $$ more. If anyone wants to arrive a day or two earlier, they'll be able to get the same rate. After the 18th, the rate goes back up.

Jeanette and I will undoubtedly have another hamburger get together at our place on Friday night the 16th. We sure enjoyed the last one!

This is obviously a ways off, but I know some have to plan their vacations well in advance, so hopefully this will help in that area. Looking forward to seeing everyone again!!

Had every intention of attending the last one, but the week before "things" happened around here to prevent my plan from falling into place. Once again, We are definitely putting this on our calendar as a "must" do affair...have been wanting to do this for years...and we appreciate you putting things together for us.

We stayed a Red Arrow in Sept 2015. Still a great place, but not a Best Western anymore.

New Mexican restaurant on site. (same building).

We hope to be there.

For those travelling from afar that might also attend WingDing, it is in Billings, Aug 31 to Sept 3.

Okay, Okay, what road and where was the pic in post #8 taken? :smile2:

Here is one that did not show on your Spotwalla screen.

Grand Mesa Scenic Byway

Its pretty neat because it can be accessed by either I-70 from the West, or the long way from Montrose to the South end at Cedaredge.

I would get on at I-70, ride to Cedaredge and back to I-70. Then go North to Glenwood Canyon and back. Then continue South on I-70 through De Beque Canyon then back to Montrose.

What a pity that this RG 2016 is being held about one month after I complete my 3 month trip to the USA. I attended RG 2008 and had a blast!

I've begun to discover a couple of local roads that I can't wait to explore on my bike as soon as some more of the snow melts. Gramps mentioned the ride over Grand Mesa which is absolutely fantastic. I'd also recommend checking out this run from Delta to De Beque using some of the local back roads.

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Delta,+CO/De+Beque,+CO/@39.0407517,-108.4396502,10.17z/data=!4m24!4m23!1m15!1m1!1s0x8747520e647e4aa5:0x6ed8b3790b42727!2m2!1d-108.0689582!2d38.7422062!3m4!1m2!1d-107.994941!2d38.8268019!3s0x8740b4636f0c95cd:0x7f6ecdf52d2d06a2!3m4!1m2!1d-107.9762592!2d38.8842678!3s0x8740b5ecba6178e1:0x331f7cdefd3e8d5d!1m5!1m1!1s0x8746d0162e1a7c4d:0x2048888b5a3563f1!2m2!1d-108.2150816!2d39.3344233!3e0

Everything is paved. First time I rode what the locals call the "De Beque cut off," it was a very dark, moonless night. :eek:4: Not for the faint of heart! But you will spend a lot of time carving through corners over this 70 mile run.

Thank you for this tip. I think I will make a route/loop that goes up through the Grand Mesa then over to Doc Holiday's grave site in Glenwood Springs. Wanted to do that last time too and ran out of time.

Gramps, sounds like you have an epic adventure planned. I hope you post of your travels along the way.

I sure am looking forward to September,
Dan

Reservations Made!

Just made our reservations at Red Arrow for Rocky's Gold 2016! Requested the same 1st level room we had last year as we could wheel our Unigo right in and unpack it from inside. Also like last year we are arriving way early....on Sunday the 11th and staying all week. Six full days to ride those awe inspiring roads.

Also this time I think I will take the wife on that train ride I've been meaning to do for years.

Dan, The Darango-Silverton Train Ride is a great way to spend the day. You can bus one way and take the train the other. (either way) We took the train both ways and June and I enjoyed it. Looks different each way. Only in Silverton long enough for lunch but not much there anyway.
We'd do it again in a heart-beat. Your making a good choice.

Just about seven months away. Another pic to wet the appetite. This is along CO 141 that is part of the "Unaweep Loop". We stopped in Gateway at the general store for gas. This next trip we will visit the auto museum in Gateway which we skipped last time.

My wife and I made a run on our Wing up to Gateway today. Temps in the upper 50's and dry roads made for a perfect day. Only saw about 6 or 7 other bikes on 141 and the views were spectacular! Of course I walked out the door without my camera. Oh well, just have to take another ride up there!

If I was to travel from Florida to Montrose, my map program gave me 3 route options, with the difference in time only showing 1 hour and 100 mile max difference between them.

Route 1 takes me from Central Florida through the Panhandle, thru Southern Alabama to Shreveport, Louisiana then Dallas then Amarillo, then Northwest to Montrose.

Route 2 takes me from Central Florida, up I-75 to Atlanta, then West to Birmingham, Alabama, Memphis, Little Rock, Oklahoma City, Dumas, Texas, then Northwest to Montrose.

Route 3 takes me from Central Florida up I-75 through Nashville, St. Louis, Kansas City, then right through the middle of Kansas to Montrose.

Driving time is 29-30 hours, depending on route chosen per the map which means 3-4 days of riding there then back.

I am thinking of taking route 3 to and route 2 back due to expected traffic and better scenery.

Am I thinking correctly?

I have driven all three routes you describe in a car. I believe you are thinking correctly. On route 2 I would not go to Atlanta though. Go over to Tallahassee and 231 N to 65 to Birmingham.

Ron.....or, others that have camped or know about campgrounds at Montrose..... I'm planning on camping some enroute to and then after Montrose. What choice(s) are there? If I do camp, I would hope a campgrounds is close to the host motel? If not close, clean, secure and decent I more than likely need to be making motel reservations soon. Thanks all....Chip

Today's Wing flight took me around the north rim of the Black Canyon. Pretty sure it won't look like this by the time September rolls around!

Been on hwy92 by north rim several times but have never seen it look like that...BEAUTIFUL.

Really looking forward to September,

6 Months From Today

Six months from now we will be on a ride somewhere in SW Colorado. A couple more pics to share from last year. First one is some where on the Unaweep Loop on CO 141. Second one is me getting gas in Lake City on CO 149 as part of the Silverthread Loop. This next trip we're going to explore the town of Lake City some...it looked like a neat rustic little town.

If I'm not mistaken(which happens all the time) the 1st pic is within about 5 miles or so of the hanging flume.
