The Wing really doesn't land it self to tank bag use, the one shown looks like it attaches with magnets, for a steel tank.

I disagree about Wing not landing well with tank bag use. I have used a tank bag with every motorcycle I have traveled with. At first with the 2001 I made a metal bracket that someone on this forum had used with a certain brand. Traded the 01 for a 2012 and now I'm using a CORTECH tank bag that has a strap that runs under the ignition switch. The bottom is foam and will not scratch the plastic. When I stop for gas I have a string that I attach to my left ram mount, lift up the bag, attach the other end of the string to the right Ram mount. Keeps bag up and out of the way to fill gas tank. Tank bag is a good place to store charging cables for phone, Sena, GPS, food, tools, meds, sun tan lotion, heated clothing controller. I always attach the bag for any trip that will be more than 100 miles. Worked great on IBA runs this summer, two SS1000, one BB1500, and a 9,801 mile trip out west.
MPO- tank bag DOES land its self well with a GL1800.

So, I take it a bag over the radio and all the audio controls is ideal ? op's bike is an 06, Navy !

I know the 12s don't have the radio on the center, still some have the air bag or at the very least a compartment there.

As I stated in my post I used a tank bag on my "01" with no problems. That included NOT having any problems with radio controls. The tank bag was very similar to the Electrical Connection bag. IF I had a GL1800 other than a 2012 I'd consider the one from EC. If you look it has a bracket that keeps it off the controls. On a long ride it's handy having gear in a bag on the trunk.

I really like the look of the EC tank bag and almost pulled the trigger on it.

I stumbled across a guy who was using a small camelbak lumbar pack resting between his legs and attached to the gas door by looping its little loop thing over the cylinder for the latch. I ordered one from REI here (note this model has the little loop top center) and a short test drive and packing shows promise for what I want it for, though I have not yet tested it in any long ride.

Pros -
- only $60
- includes hydration
- room for a few small knick-knacks and snacks
- super easy on/off
- doesn't cover radio controls

Cons -
- no map case
- need to lash up or cut off waist straps so they're not dangling
- small
- gets in way of gas cap lock requiring a flip up, but I'm going to do the radio knob key mod so I think it will be easy to just reach under and open.

TBD.....

Tank bag, EC is not the right size or price:money1: I was looking for. Just a map case and map holder. Even with a bag with a magnet base I believe I could put down a metal strip over a layer of Clear Scotch Guard for the magnet to hold on to.

Anyone that has replaced maps and landmarks/the Sun's position with GPS, well, I just cannot ride with you... sorry. :sun1:
Bummer...

OK, I do keep a very small Atlas on the bike just in case, (4"x6" maybe) but I rarely ever have to reach for it.

One of the features I find to be great about a GPS is being able to purposely get lost, (do that allot) land up two or three hundred miles somewhere in Timbuktu and with one push of a button all is good.

Info like nearest place for gas, food/drink, miles to get back home and finally getting home using the most direct route if I choose to do so is great info to have at your finger tips.

I agree, over the years I have really taken advantage of the Tank bag, & I miss not having one on the "Wing", I am going to explore some of the ideas mentioned, & see what I can come up with. covering the radio is of no consern as I don't use it, I'd also like to fit the "Wing" with Panners .

What's a "map" ?
I'm not much for maps either, but the map pocket is a great place for the GPS

You've really made my point...

getting totally purposely lost several hundred miles from home and then having to use your instincts/cleverness to get back ON YOUR OWN is even better! I too do this all the time.

:yes1:

Tank Bag

Tank bag is for Europe where WITH a map and GPS I get lost. I have Ram mounted a GPS to a Windbender lower windshield.

So far GPS Garmin 660 for where the ?%$# am I locations, address and routs and MAPS as a reference on back roads. Map tank bag to keep local and country Maps together on a cross Countries ride.

PS (1) I was looking for a Pension listed as outside of a Alps Austrian village with 10 roads out of this a tiny farm village. Four hours later and not finding the correct road and Pension I gave up. The locals all gave us different directions and roads. I now carry a GPS.

(2) Next day heading to a Pension on the Swiss APLS, I was Detoured off the main road down a one lane blind switchbacks that went on "FOREVER" at Dusk. About a 2000 Ft drop in elevation. I know it wasn't a cliff because it had a road on it. I now carry a GPS in Europe.

(3) Later in week, Riding in the Black Forest, off map. Road into a village with a hundred sport bikes (me two up on a large BMW freeway bagger). As I asked for direction they laughed and ask where I was going with "That Bike" on that forest twisty road. Humbled, I now carry a GPS and Maps in Europe.

I have Panners on my wing. strapped over the seat and they rest on the passengers foot board. used them on my trip out west last summer. Worked great along with tank bag. Don't know how to post pictures or I'd show.
