    Default Need Help with Rear Wheel Removal on 1100 V-Star

    Hi!

    How do you get the rear wheel off the 1100 V-Star? I am putting on new tires for a lady in our Motorcycle Club and have run into a serious problem! After pulling the axle and the brake caliper the wheel could not slide over far enough to remove due to the bracket that holds the brake caliper being in the way. The only way I can see to get the bracket out is to first remove the brake disc. Is that the correct procedure? So, I begin removing the allen head bolts holding the disc on and one of the socket heads stripped out! I have not yet been successful in removing the bolt. Any ideas? Is there a better way to remove the wheel? I sure wished she had a shop manual! Thanks!

    Try letting the air out of the tire and see if it will pass by.

    I did mine over the July 4th week. And yes, a shop manual helps. Brake disc removal is not necessary.
    In addition to removing the brake caliper you also need to remove the caliper bracket. Once you do, the rear wheel will slide out.
    When re-installing, be sure you lube the drive shaft worm gear with Moly grease.

    Take 2 bolts out of caliper and hang it up

    Unbolt caliper bkt from swing arm

    Take off axle nut

    Take out 4 bolts holding differential in swing arm

    Unbolt axle holder on right side

    Pull rear end, wheel, axle, & caliper bkt straight back & off the bike

    Pull axle, caliper bkt & spacer out

    Separate wheel from rear end

    There's a long spacer in the rear end that can fall out, keep an eye out for it

    It may sound like a lot of trouble to pull the rear end out, but after the rear end of the bike is jacked up, it takes less than 5 minutes to get the wheel off. Different brands of pipes can get in the way.
