    Default Trike endorsement required

As of June 2, 2008 the state of South Carolina has added a trike/sidecar endorsement on the drivers license. Unless you had obtained a waiver prior to them creating the endorsement you must test to have it put on your license..

So let me get this straight....
You get a MC endorsement .. pay the bucks...
then to drive a hack, or a trike you have to take ANOTHER TEST, and PAY ANOTHER FEE!!!???

    Is that what your saying???

As We know, the skills required to ride a trike or a hack are different than those required to ride a bike. I would have no quarrel with testing if I had confidence that the "testing" would be adequate. I don't.

According to the DMV site, the endorsement is DM. D being your standard drivers license and M being motorcycle. I am not sure about the seperate testing required but I plan to find out. One of the bad things about SC and motorcycle licenses are that most people don't have them. They ride on a learners permit and just keep renewing it because most of them can't pass the skills test.

I know of one guy that has ridden on his permit for 10 years, just keeps renewing it every year. So it may be a "revenue" scam, but anything to get people to demonstrate competency is a good thing in my book.

Don't worry, it won't end there. I've been driving a truck for 30yrs and have a class A CDL with 5 endosements. The HAZ/MAT has to be re-taken every time you renew your license. Last year the re-test went from $5.00 to $25.00 and now you have to be fingerprinted and checked by the FBI and homeland security.(Additional $100.00) So now my "drivers license" cost $200.00 each time, and as far as I can tell nothing has changed except for my desire for a new career...

I checked with DMV and this is a fact now. They just published the Manual and it appears that it is the exact same one that Washington uses. Right down to the riding test. I would think that if you can do this on two wheels you should be able to do it on three.

    So definately Revenue....

So next Wednesday, 6/18, when I go to test drive the Bombardier
Demo Syders that have arrived in town for 1 week, a LEO can give
me a ticket? I hope they are a little lenient, or maybe they will just
set up shop across the street & generate a record number of citations.

I hope I can do the figure eights without putting my feet down on a
    trike.

I live 2 blocks from the DMV, so I got it made for convenience.

I am not sure about the spyder, as technically its not a trike. They classify a trike as one leading wheel, 2 trail wheels. Will be interesting to see what they come up with for it.

    Mike,
Are you stating S C law? The states that I am familiar with do not specify which end the two wheels are on to make the vehicle a trike. The Grinnall Scorpion 111, the T-Rex and others are considered trikes by most states and meet federal standards as motorcycles; though they like the Spyder have two wheels in front, one in the rear and do not lean.
A friend 'swears' that he rode Deal's Gap (Tail of the Dragon) without leaning on a m/c. He is kinda slow and deliberate.

Have now seen the actual law on three wheelers here in SC. It is as follows...

A motor vehicle having no more than three permanent
functional wheels in contact with the ground and includes
motorcycles with detachable side cars, having a saddle type
seat for the operator, and handle bars or a motorcycle type
steering device, but excludes a tractor or automotive
    three-wheel vehicle.

So I guess the Spyder will be counted as a trike.

The S C language is similar to that which I have seen for most states. Vehicles with two wheels in front and one in the rear are typically called reverse trikes.

Probably true. It also may be to prevent someone from testing on a trike and then jumping on a two wheeler without proper testing / training.

Just reading the SC DMV manual, they refer to the trike/sidecar endorsement as a 'restriction', and go on to describe the obtaining of a trike/sidecar learners permit and the restrictions.

That would lead me to believe that the DM endorsement on a SC license will cover a three wheel vehicle, but if you do not have the DM, you could obtain a learners permit for a trike.

Very similar to a FAA Pilots Licence for Multi Engine Land, compared to one with the restriction of Center-line Thrust Only.

I know Oregon has a Motorcycle endorsement, but if you take the test on a small bike, they put a restriction of 500CC on the endorsement. If you take the test on a large bike, no restriction. Same with a Commercial Drivers Liscense - Class 1,2, or 3, with endorsements of Air Brakes, Bus, Tankers, Triple Trailers, and HAZMAT. Like Trikerjim said, all about money.
