Default Trailer Registration in NY ????

I recently bought a new Trailer {Aluma-Clone}, price was right. Does anyone know about DMV registration deal on trailers? Are they like bikes, every April? How much is the fee?

All trailer registration fees in NY are based on their weight, i.e. the more they weigh, the more it costs. Mine, registered for 350 lbs, is $11.50 / year. The fee doesn't change intil it's over 1,000lbs. If you register after the 1st of the year, it's pro-rated. All trailers expire at the end of the calendar year.

    Hope this helps.

    They all expire December 31st.
Your initial registration will also see you paying NY sales tax, if you haven't already done so, as well fees for a new plate. After that, it reverts to they regular yearly fee, based on weight.
The later you wait in the year to register, the less you'll pay, but realistically, you'll only save a portion of the yearly fee ($11.50)
Let me know if you have any other questions & I'll help if I'm sure of the answer.

The worst thing about having a trailer in this state is having to get it inspected each year. Governor Patterson will probably raise the fee in 09 to raise some more cash

    You actually get yours inspected?????

Most people I know don't bother. I guess if you save enough money over the years by not paying inspections it will more than cover the fine, or so some people seem to think.

Minimum fine is $75.00 plus the court surcharge.
Inspection, I believe is $6 or $10 yearly. I get mine done with the bike once a year. I hate paying the fees, but I would hate paying the fine(s) even more.

MCY trailers are treated like regular trailers in NYS. As a result you get a big fat auto size plate. Trailer registrations are valid for one year and expire on December 31. If you do not use your trailer until later in the year, you can renew the trailer registration later, and pay a lower pro-rated fee.

I just paid mine -- it was $14.50.

Small (under 1000 pounds) trailer, looks like the Gov raised those fees too.

They have mine down as 500 lbs, but that is really the loading cap.
The actual weight is 176 lbs.
Guess I gotta go to DMV to fight this one.

You guys should work with your state legislators and get the state DMV to establish a new category for small utility trailers. In VA we have a category where you can register a small utility trailer and get a permanent tag. You pay a one time fee of $50.00.

But then with your tax shortfall that be a hard sell to a NY legislature.

I went to DMV today, they showed the computor screen, $14.50, and the rest is NYC SURCHARGE. Total $39.50. Now that just sucks. I assume that they will pull the same with the bike this year too.

Something with your registration must not be right, I just got mine back after payingon line, 14.50, no surcharge. Maybe because it's a new registration??

Now, back in Dec., i mentioned the new trailer surcharges, $14.50 reg, bal. surch., as i predicted, my Motorcycle reg. jump up the same.
For years i paid $14.00, now the surcharges jack them to $39.50

You might want to check what weight you have it registered for. I just renewed mine for $14.50 12 months, registered for 350 lbs.

    Default NYS Plates

Did you check the box for the "new gold plate"? That will double the cost for a renewal. First timers I think will have no choice.
