    Default Rotella T5

    Picked up a gallon of this at Walmart for $12. I did a search on Rotella and saw most were using T6 in the blue jug. This stuff is "T5" in a grey jug, is 10W30 and is NOT "Energy Conserving".

    What is the difference between T5 and T6 and anyone using T5?

    T6 is syntheic 5w40 i tried it in my 01 worked pretty good till i got in traffic and 95 degree temps.then my clunk was worse than with honda 10w40 syn-blend so i changed back.The regular oil may work fine but i wouldn't go any thinner than 10w30 or 40.

    Rotella T6 is synthetic, T5 is a blend.

    Rotella T6 is the same original synthetic oil that has been discussed on this board for years.

    I've used the T5 for the last 10,000 miles. It works fine, shifting is fine, but I've never been able to get into the shifting difficultys a lot of guys have. I just prefer to stay 10W30 as that's what's called for and the Rotella is easily purchased at Walmart. Quite a few oil analysis on Bob is the oil guy and it's pretty evident the 5W40 T6 shears quickly, so those wanting the "40" part, it's "30" then "20" pretty quickly.

    I've never seen the 10w30. Local Walmart has 15w40 and 5w40 syn. I use the dino 15/40

    Rotella 15W40 shifts great for the money. You'll have to spend 3 times as much to get a better shifting oil. There are better shifting oils out there (like Mobil 4T, Amsoil, ect.) but for the money ........... 15W40 Rotella works just fine. Change it at 5K-8K miles. Run ANY oil in the wing beyond that point and shifting will be less than optimum because the polymer package has been ripped apart by the tranny. Some synthetics will hang in there slightley longer than the regular dino oil, but the marginally improved operating life of the oil doesn't justfiy the cost difference to me.

    All the T6 I have seen is the wrong viscosity for this bike. I would not recommend using it.

    I think Stu Oatman from Wing World recommended shell rotella T fully synthetic for the gold wing in an article a year or so back.

    yes, i think it was a few years ago when Stu Oltman from Wing World sort of endorsed Shell synthetic 5-40 for use in the wing, anyway thats mostly what i've been using since works great, reasonable price and its even JASO certified for motorcycle use

    +1 I've been using the Rotella 5w-40 for 163,000 smiles with no adverse effects on engine, shifting, etc. I suggest using whatever makes you feel all warm and fuzzy.

    I switched to T6 and just changed at the 8k interval. Bike shifted smoothly the entire time. I'm in Maine so I am not riding in hot weather very much. Not sure if that is a 5w consideration or not. Love the oil, love the price. I used Amsoil prior to that. Too expensive for when I retire.

    FWIW....

    The T5 does not carry the JASA MA rating. The T6 does, as does the Rotella dino oil (T Triple Protection). Seems odd that the T5 would not.

    I also use T-6.
    Change oil and Honda filter every 3,000 miles
