For those who might not be familiar with it, this is a three-day memorial ride (Aug. 16th-18th) starting in Somerset, PA (where Flight 93 plowed into an open field), then going to the Pentagon crash site in Arlington, VA, and then to the Twin Towers site in NYC.
The ride is limited to 1,000 bikers. They are dedicating this year's ride to the 417 police and firefighters who died in and around the Twin Towers. It's $150 to register (at the website link at top), with proceeds going to scholarships for the children of the fallen public safety personnel. Being a retired police officer (who KitCarson and his sidekick, shuckaduck, does NOT love, by the way ), I'm very proud to be a part of this show of respect.
The whole two-day riding route, from Somerset to Arlington to NYC, is about 400 miles long, and is escorted every step of the way, with emergency road service available throughout the route.
So I registered today! And I ordered a denim long-sleeve shirt and a t-shirt, too. Area hotels/motels are providing discounts for those participating. I've already made reservations for everything but the New York stay so far. I'm going to leave two days early from middle-western Georgia with a stopover in Charlotte on the evening of the 14th, leave in the morning and be in Somerset, PA on the evening of the 15th, ready to ride with the group the next day to the first of the three sites we will visit.
If anyone has been on this ride before, I have a couple of questions I'd like to ask you. I mostly need to know if I need to book one day or two in NYC (it matters, 'cause hotels are NOT cheap in that little town!!!).
Also, if anyone else has registered and happens to be leaving from the Montgomery AL to Charlotte NC area, get in touch and let's see if we can hook up on the way up there.
