Default ECM and your VIN Number

Just got off the phone with the service manager at the dealship where I got my Gold Wing. I am leaving on a trip next week and wanted to bring the bike in for the ecm change out, they could have the bike for a week and change at thier leisure.
He says he must run the vin number to see if my bike is in the recall.
I thought anyone who had a 01 to 03 wing could have the ecm changed out if they wanted with no questions asked.
Is he right or just blowing smoke.
    Thanks
    George

He's blowing smoke up the trail. ALL '01's-'03 get the ECM replacement if the owner so desires, regardless if it 's the original owner, or second, or third owner. ALL GL1800's prior to '04 are eligable.

Sure glad that I don't have one of these bozo dealers that are always blowing smoke up your, well, as Jim M says, "trail". That should be a priority fix for the dealer and to keep it a week and "work it in" seems somewhat unreasonable to me.

Thanks guys I didn't think I was having a senior moment.
Mike thank you for the link I printed all eight page. I also knew
I had a letter from Honda which states and I quote: We will replace the
Engine Control Module on every owner's Gold Wing GL 1800 who wishes to have it with a ECM containing the new mapping.

Instead of buying the bike from the dealer I had done business with before I bought from different dealer. I wonder if I got down on my knees the old dealer would take me back, because I'm convinced the new dealer has service way down at the bottom of his list. These people think that we just got off the boat and don't have a clue to what is going on.
His words to me were, you will have to show me a letter.. well I am going to show him a letter and a service bulletin that he should also have.
    Thank again,
    George

If it were me I would show him the letter, have a few words with him about his proposed service and then walk out the door. But ? Thats me ! Maybe the other dealer would welcome some additional service ? Can't hurt can it ? Never know unless you ask.
