Default turn signal cancel/ temp display

Thanks to all for sharing! I did my 08 yesterday, probably made more of it than I needed to, but before I start changing things I want to fully understand it and get it right the first time!

I also put a switch in the speed sensor line for the GPS, and,, found that with my 08 you have to use the double pole switch and override the clutch switch also. Thanks again, especially to KJ51X for a good description, John

I did this mod to my 2001 the other day - works great! Thanks a bunch George and Waldo

I started looking for the wire that goes from the cancel switch to the cancel unit in the left side harness and finally gave up - I never could find a green wire with a white stripe. So, instead, I used Waldo's suggestion to get at the wire from the harness that goes down the steering stem tube:

I pulled the rubber cover off the steering tube and unplugged the little connector there to better get at the wires. Strangely, the wire on the female side of that connector was solid light green, while the matching wire on the male side of the connector (the portion of the wire that goes inside the tube) was light green with a white stripe.

To make sure I did, indeed, have the wire from the turn signal cancel switch, I poked it with hypodermic needle with a test lead attached. I hooked that lead to the positive probe of my VOM meter and grounded the other probe. With the ignition on, you should see about 5 volts. Then, when you press the cancel switch in, it should drop to zero volts.

I cut about a 3/16" section of insulation off the light green wire (I did not cut the wire) and then wrapped the end of my connecting wire around the exposed area. I folded a 3x5 card and slipped it under the wire so as to not melt the other wires when I soldered. I made the connecting wire be as parallel to the light green wire as possible and then soldered it and wrapped it with electrical tape.

I put one of those insulated spade connectors on the connection wire so it can be disconnected if needed in the future.

For the blue/yellow wire from the display button, I used the same soldering technique. I got at the wire from the male plug that is hooked onto the ignition switch.

The most difficult part for me was getting at the wires to work on them - there is not much room nor slack to work with, so it takes some time and fiddling to get the insulation off and get them soldered. However, it is well worth the effort - a very nice enhancement!

I had my bike tore down where I sent the suspension off to Traxxion for the full Monty treatment and ran across this post.

This was as simple as it gets! I tapped into the wire coming off the steer tube and soldered straight to the circuit board at the buttons. That seemed to be the simplest for me. Because the bike was already opened up, it only took about 14 minutes and it works just as everyone described. I love it!
Thanks to everyone for posting and sharing this great idea!

DJ if this flipped your switch you should see what I did with the unused switches on the right side (Memo1 &2, and up dn adjust) after triking,,, made a duel garage opener, and relay controls for various things.

Thanks for the feed back

Another satisfied customer. I just did the mod on my '05. I hard wired it from the signal harness (green/white) to the female side of the display harness (blue/yellow). That way it doesn't have to be disconnected to remove the cover.

Thanks KJ5IX for the original idea and all you others who chimed in with refinements.

Very nice mod...

But - - I want to use the CB switches... maybe control other functions too.. like "Info" and "Display". "Flash to Pass".

I'll never install the Honda CB, so those switches are useless except for other options.

I am surprised nobody has found other uses for them.

What colors are the wires for those?.. maybe I'll toy with them.

Thanks KJ5IX and Waldo. Did my '08 yesterday and it went very smoothly. Had to keep running back upstairs to my computer to make sure I was looking at the right wires...green/yellow/red/white??....doh!!
As you can see I don't post much, but I'm on here every day, and your mod is something I really wanted to do.

THANKS KJ... I bookmarked that for future reference.

I'm thinking of Xing them with the "Display" "Info" buttons so I can access them without taking my hands off of the bars.

Sounds like a good project when it's raining outside.

That is what I did. I hooked up to the display wire. I liked this better than the temp display.I changed display more than look at temp.

Well I finally got around to performing this job, and like everyone else said it is great. I did not solder anything though, I don't feel comfortable soldering wires in a loom, afraid I will mess up adjoining wires. So I used Posi-Tap connectors in the handlebar wire bundle, and in the four wire bundle that exits the little connector in front of the ignition switch.

I am SOOO not electrical... but I am a surgeon and if I just think of these as arteries and veins and nerves I may be good. Plus I'll use the minimally invasive approach and a 5 inch abdominal retractor.

I'm scrubbing up and heading in..........which me luck!!
