Default Use turn signal cancel buton to display temp

Original Thread location: http://gl1800riders.com/forums/showthread.php?t=195146

I split the harness on the left side at the triple tree, and spliced into the turn cancel switch line direct. The LightGreen/White wire in the harness bundle.

Cut the covering of the harness around it completely, and down the center a couple of inches, so you can peel it back and away from the wires.

Find the LightGreen/White wire in the bundle, and with a straight pin, and a volt meter (push the pin into the wire) ( 5 Volts Present here) check that the 5 Volts swings to 0 Volts when you push the turn cancel switch.
I cut the wire, and slipped a piece of heat shrink onto the long side. Then attached another piece of wire the same size, and soldered it. Pull up the heat shrink and shrink it for a good seal, and protection from shorting.

Measure the wire that was added to reach the center of the triple tree with an inch or so to spare, and put on a covered, spade connector. That side is ready.

(This is what I did, Waldo's Enhancement is below)
The wafer end of sw3 ( Blue/Yellow wire ) is open ended so the 5 volts doesn't have any affect on the switch at all. The Blue/Yellow wire is on the corner of the board inside the switch housing that is on the dash cover.

I took the switch housing apart, and soldered the other wire to the Blue/Yellow at the board.

I single wrapped at the solder joint, and soldered there, then fed the wire back up and out the short plastic lume, leaving about 4 inches for the connector, and wa-la there it was.

Tested it several times with the meter in line and put it all back together and went for a quick hundred or so checking the Temp now and then, and even when canceling the turn as expected.
Also as expected the DISP switch doubles as a Turn Cancel should I ever forget where it is, and need to do that.

Basic bottom line it works just as thought and wasn't all that bad of a mod, it only took about 45 min to get it all together.

I also removed the tip on the switch connector under the top cover, that thing always slows me down and can be a little frustrating, now it slides in and out with just a little resistance, and no looking for the tiny flat blade to get it loose.

I would put the other end of that wire which goes to the BLUE/YELLOW into the plug that's stuck on the ignition switch so you would only have to unplug it for air cleaner changes. IF you put it on the plug that's attached to the meter panel switches, you will have to unplug it every time you take off your meter panel.

Additional note for the 08 Models:

It is the RED/W-Yellow Strip wire in the plug that is used, not the Blue/Yellow. There are two red wires in the plug cluster. The wire needed is in the second slot, NOT the red wire in the first slot. Just did RareSS's today, and had to re-dope it out, but still only took right at an hour.

Thanks George and Waldo!! I did this on my 2006 Model tonight and it works great... (took me about an hour) I used the method pictured above. No problems at all.. I usede the staple probe method at the connector.

I'm not sure that on mine that it was the Blue/Yellow wire at the connector. I tested each one till it worked by using the wire and probe on the inside of the connector and then probed it permanantly.

Went for a short ride and all works Fantastic. No more searching for the info button at night, etc.... just a quick push of the turn signal button and wallah! the outside temperature is displayed.

Thanks again!!!

can I use these to make my connections on the above mentioned wires? then I would be able to disconnect from either end. also does this mod affect the cancel of the turn signals?

Yes you should be able to use the Spade Quick Connects if there is room for them in the bundle.

This mod has NO Effect on the Auto Canceling at all.

It is in the same place, the triple tree tube, the rubber cap in the center.

Default Mod

got around to doing mine today, took less than an hour start to finish. Did have a little trouble finding the correct wire in the loom, I was looking for a light green wire with white tracer and it was the other way around on my 01. The wire was white with a green tracer. Other than that, no problems. Works great!! Thanks!!!!

I had the same problem finding the right wire. Mine was also white with a green tracer. ( 2001 ) Works great and is an easy, and real helpful mod. It's sure easier to display the temp and safer too. Thanks guys

JB, that is correct. Mine does the same thing. I thought something was wrong too till I remembered if you press the info button that many times it does the same thing... cycles thru the temp/suspension/off. Basically all we've done is extended the info button switch to the turn signal cancel switch.

Love this mod!! Thanks!!

I have had the dash and all apart before, so no problem there. I think it would be nice to have some experienced help in the wiring department! I am just not sure enough of myself to cut the harness wires and know it was right! ha ha
Is there a place over there in Graham, where I can buy all of the needed supplies before we started on it?
If you would not mind helping, I would ride over next week sometime, when you are available. (I will also get to meet you! )

I read George's instructions several times and didn't really understand them until I actually started taking everything apart. Once I was into the project it all made sense. I feel just a little smarter everytime I push the 'cancel' button and view the temp. Thanks George.

This looks like a great mod to do. I have been checking it out and thinking about it for awhile now. I hope to have time this weekend to get it done. Looks to be straight forward enough. I'll let you know how it goes.

Did anyone notice if the temp will display after making a turn after auto cancel activates?
The snow is blowing like crazy here again, so it will be a while before I get to play.

Additional information added for late model wire identification (08 Nav) I suspect that this applies to the 06 to 09 ?? but not sure. Best to test along the way to verify. I had to take the switch apart to find the right wire, easy to do there is only two small screws holding the back plate on, and from there just look for the color of wire that corresponds to the buton.
