Hot Dog, what a great time/ride that was. While the roads were a little “damp” to start with, they cleared up along with the sky. A few of the local hearty souls showed up and a good time was had by all. This little Family outing further expanded not only my waist line, but my knowledge of a few of the locals.
![]() Take for example Scott. This guy casually strolled into our first stop and very nonchalantly ordered a foot long with some heavy fix’ns. Now most of us were at the table and had a good head start on him with our regular sized dogs. After all, it was going to be a long day, and I was not able to arrange for my training session with the little guy that wins all those hot dog championships. The strategy was start out slow and finish big! I was working on the last third of my Dog when I looked over at Scott to see him cleaning up his tray and throwing away the napkins. GAME ON!!!!!!!! I was able to capture a photo of Margarita Will to show where he was with his Hot Dog as we were ready to leave. (NOTE TO SELF, let Will order first and give him plenty of room not only at the fix’n bar, but at the table as well since things end up all over. I could not bring myself to post a picture of him as he was about done, (there could be young kids that watch this site), but lets say he makes good use of the napkins. . . . table cloth. . . . shirt sleeves (of those sitting next to him when I only had a short sleeve on), and most of the front of his shirt. ![]() Wanting to make sure that the first dog that I got at Zacks was not a mistake (the day we did not go because of possible bad weather), I again went with the BBQ Pulled Pork Dog with lots of chopped onions and some hot sauce. UMMMM, was it good. Still a good choice. What impressed me however was the way that the Astute Reader (Lee) was able to neatly craft his dog and yet make it so colorful. Although I think I did hear him say that he thought his tasted a little waxy! We all agreed however that he got a 10 on presentation. ![]() Caroline and Nancy were extremely neat and no fun to watch. The Judges were in agreement and they were given a 10 on cleanliness and a 3 on “Overloading the Dog.” After some brief discussions, the judges were all in agreement that this was a place that needed further examination, thus a return trip will be in order. Details to be announced. Next we moved on to Ann’s. NOW THIS is a Hot Dog Place. You could smell the dogs a mile away, but we still almost missed the driveway. This little slice of hot dog heaven was a sight to behold. As you entered the room (yes, it is not much bigger then a room), there are 8 ladies behind the counter hollering at you as you enter “what’ll it be there HON! Having no chance to study the menu, I was quick to react and say “Ill have a hot dog.” The stunned looks on their faces allowed me just enough time to push the tall guy in front of me out of the way and see “chill and onions.” So I quickly followed up with and “throw some chill and onions on it HON and make it a double half regular! Well, I got the look of approval and just too really come off as a pro, I said, and add some fries and a Vanilla Milk Shake with that. The look I got was one to total acceptance by the ladies. Thinking that I had Scott right where I wanted him, I turned and eagerly waited for his order. I was stunned, as we all were. He AGAIN, ordered a foot long and had it loaded with chilly and some other stuff. Margarita Will was next up (I know, we should have had him go in first), and he tried to redeem himself by going with a double dog with chilly and onions foot long. Nice try, but as we all watched (we all had been done for a few hours and had run out of things to talk about), we noticed that the last half was going down very slowly. Large Beads of sweat were forming on his forehead and side bets were being made as to whether he would finish. After entering, we quickly moved to take 5 of the 7 stools they had at the counter, and waited for our orders. I must tell you what an experience it was to try eating your dog as people were reaching over and around you to get their orders, hand you money to hand to the ladies and the ladies hollering over your heads, What’ll it be HON as folks hit the door. I was worried at one point that the one older lady that was making the milkshakes was about to start throwing them at one of the other ladies because she thought she heard “Strawberry with nuts,” and then realized it was without the nuts. It was touch and go for a second. It would have been ugly since at the counter you were right in the line of fire. Once we finished, most went their separate ways. Margarita Will and I headed over to another buddies of mine to say hello and check out his new house. He built a house on the water that has 4 floors, a beer cooler on each floor and an elevator. As we entered the garage, he DEMANDED that we eat some fresh Oysters with him as we watched the football game, so not wanting to upset him, we did. ![]() Stay tuned for Capo Will’s report as it will include more “stuff” then I was able to “mustard” up. Look for further reports as we all agreed we have a good idea for the next ride.

I take my hat off to you brave souls. Was going to give it a try but the thermometer just could not get up above 28 degrees. Considering a 10 mph wind gusting to 20mph, with no heated equipment, needless to say my appetite for Hot Dogs soon diminished. Maybe, next time.

Having been under the weather for about a week and a half, I decided it was too much for me to try and meet them at Ann's. Plus my weather here in Burtonsville was the same as yours there in Columbia. FYI..............Guys, I used to go to Ann's back in the late 1950's and early 1960's. Yep...........they been around a while!! Dave Bohrer Silver Spring (Burtonsville area) |
