I pulled down on the left hand side of the speaker box and it exposed the screw just enough to remove it. I did it this way because I didn't want to trim the "ledge" in front of the screw. HOWEVER, when it came time to put the screws back in after speaker installation, I had to bite the bullet and just use my dremel tool to lightly trim down the plastic in front of the speaker just enough to get the screw to go in easily.

There is no need to remove the windshield or upper plastic.

I just pried it up and away gently. No problem. I have an assortment of plastic pry tools. They come in handy for stuff like this. Be advised that there is not a whole lot holding the nut on those plastic speaker boxes. Be gentle.

This was definitely dumb on Honda's part. I took care of that problem the first time I took my speakers out by cutting a notch with my Dremel. You can see the notch in this picture.

..Thanks for the input... here's what I did... Used a 3/8 wratchet handle and pried at the plastic to clear the screw enough to remove. Installation was a bitch... couldnt get everything lined up...and no way do the 501 holes line up to the housing. What I did was snip the holes of the speakers and made them open ended slots. I installed the said screw with washer but not tight. The speaker then slipped right in. I then installed other screws and tightened and done. Didnt want to make holes or modify the plastic, especial where I needed to...it was strengthened there for a reason....didnt want to weaken anything causing stress fractures later on. They do sound cleaner...not no volume increase....

That plastic lip isn't a reinforcement for strength. It is just a ledge for the edge of the meter panel cover to sit on. No way would it ever crack and spread. My slot has been that way for 8 years.

Quieter? Something doesn't sound right. (no pun intended)
